St Helens is a town in Merseyside. It has a population of 102,629. The town lies 11 miles east of Liverpool and 23 miles from Manchester.

The area developed during the Industrial Revolution and was a centre for coal mining and glassmaking. Landmarks in the town include the Church of St Helen, which was constructed between 1920 and 1926 and is a Grade II listed building. The Church of St Mary is also Grade II listed and was founded in 1924. Other nineteenth-century Grade II listed churches in the area include Holy Cross Church, St Peter's Church and St. John the Evangelist. The statue of Queen Victoria in Victoria Square is a Grade II* listed building and was unveiled in 1905. The Town Hall was built in 1876.

Other sites of interest include the North West Museum of Road Transport, which holds a collection of vehicles such as buses, cars, trucks and fire engines. The Citadel Arts Centre is an arts and community centre and opened in 1988. Victoria Park opened in 1886 and has a skate park, play areas, tennis courts and a wetland habitat. Sherdley Park, in Sutton, covers an area of 336 acres and hosts the St Helens Festival.

St Helens has facilities for sports, such as rugby, football and cricket. St Helens Town A.F.C. play their home games at the Ruskin Drive Sports Ground.

There are numerous primary and secondary schools in the area, including Cowley International College, De La Salle School, St Augustine of Canterbury Roman Catholic High School, St Cuthbert's Catholic High School and The Sutton Academy. Carmel College is a sixth form college in St Helens, while St Helens College provides further education.

The town is served by two railway stations: St Helens Central and St Helens Junction. St Helens Central railway station offers services to destinations including Liverpool, Wigan, Blackpool and Preston. There are local bus services in operation in the town to locations such as Wigan, Liverpool, Widnes and Warrington.
